The ward has turn heads, generating controversy among political pundits about the timing, while some claim it is to shore up president Mahama’s re-election bid.

President Mahama

Mr Awal ruled out political consideration in arriving at the decision at its fifth congress held in Accra.

In an interview with Pulse.com.gh Thursday, Mr Awal said: “Every year, we look at one president that has been outstanding in one way or the other. In 2013, you will recall we awarded His Excellency Paul Kagame, in 2014, we awarded His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta and in 2015 we awarded His Excellency Macky Sall and this year it came to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.”

Explaining the criteria for the award, he said it goes beyond what a given president does locally.

“Within that same period, there was a lot of instability in Burkina Faso. He showed leadership and there was some stability in that country.

“We didn’t consider the local issues because they have political connotations,” he said.
