Igwedi, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that heavy drinking of alcohol also leads to high blood pressure and kidney failure.
"Alcohol consumption is a cause of blood pressure elevation and hypertensive patients should desist from heavy drinking in the interest of their health.
"Hypertension patients who do not consume or reduce alcohol consumption are indirectly lowering their blood pressure to enable them live longer.
Igwedi, who works with Hamaan Medical Centre, Surulere, said that the long held belief that consumption of alcohol had certain health benefits should no longer be encouraged.
