These days, almost everyone works out in a gym or at home, neglecting the benefits of exercising outside with the wind in your face and the sun on your back.

This is probably because we associate exercising outside with heat, sweat or skin damage, however, despite what you might think, there are actually health benefits to exercising outside, they are:

  1. You burn more calories, thereby losing more weight- Because sunlight increases the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream and allows your body to more easily deliver oxygen to your tissues, you end up losing more weight than you do when you work out inside.

  2. Vitamin D- Working out outside in the sun increases your chances of getting the right of Vitamin D, which is necessary for supporting bone health, regulating the immune system and lowering the risk of diabetes, heart attacks, and several types of cancer.

  3. Natural anti-depressant- Sunlight is a natural anti-depressant because it stimulates our bodies to produce serotonin, which is a chemical known to induce feelings of happiness.

  4. Reduces stress- According to recent studies, spending at least five minutes spent outdoors or in the sun is all it takes to lower stress levels.

  5. You sleep better and faster- For anyone suffering from insomnia, this might just be your solution as exercising in natural sunlight (especially in the early morning hours) regulates the body’s circadian rhythm (internal clock), this means that your regulated internal clock is sure to help you fall asleep as soon as its dark, it also ensures that you sleep better through the night.
