The honeymoon is sometimes the first trip a couple has ever planned themselves as newlyweds.

However, planning a honeymoon often comes with as much stress as planning a wedding itself.

Whether you're taking a trip to the Caribbean or Europe, here are five things you need to consider and plan for:

  1. What kind of honeymoon do you want: First things first - discuss with your spouse the kind of honeymoon you two would like. Are you going for an adventure or a relaxing time at an exotic beach? Having a specific plan in mind will help you narrow your choices and make it easier to choose the best honeymoon package to suit your needs.

  2. Create a budget: Are you taking a month or a week off from work? The duration of time you have can easily limit your options. A budget can also help you in trimming down your available options. If you don't have a budget, you might end up falling in love with some things that you can afford.

  3. Choose a date: Back in the day, couples got married on Saturday and left for their honeymoon the next morning. But these days, honeymooners are moving their trip days and often weeks after the wedding. "New careers offer challenges to how long the honeymoon can be," she said.

  4. Find a good travel agent: Let a trained professional do the work. If you are not making your own wedding dress, baking your own wedding cake or cooking the food for your reception, why would you do this yourself? Travel agents also know where to look for upgrades, especially for honeymooners.

  5. Plan activities during your stay: You can either book your activities and excursions before you leave or do it when you get there. But if you are going to wait, be sure to at least be educated about what is offered before you go. And White suggests that you do not overplan. It's your honeymoon. Relax.
