A Taiwanese man has married his girlfriend's ashes after she was cremated.

The man was so grief-stricken that he had a 'ghost' wedding and a farewell ceremony in the presence of dozens of the couple's friends and family, The People's Daily Online reports.

The groom simply known as Mr Lai from Taichung had the wedding in Hsinchu village. It was gathered that he wanted to show his commitment to his dead girlfriend by marrying her even in death.

'Ghost marriages' in Asia are not unknown as the ceremony involves a dying or dead man arranged to marry a female corpse to keep him happy in the afterlife, Daily Mail reports.

The 60-second video of Mr Lai's marriage appeared online and is beginning to spread widely.

The groom is seen wearing a white suit and dark sunglasses under the white silk altar,  holding onto a black-and-gold urn which is filled with incense and has a white wedding dress attached to the lower half of it.

A wedding band is then placed one one of his gloved fingers as family and friends look on.
