Charlie Kutuyampo, had been celebrating a girl's 16th birthday on Saturday with around 100 other young people at a social club in Woodford, northeast London.

Outside the building on the Ashton Playing Fields, there was a confrontation between the victim who was alone and four male youths, said police.

One of the males then stabbed him and his friends at the party tried to save him in the park before police and paramedics arrived at around 9.40pm.

But he died just over an hour later at Whipps Cross University Hospital.

No arrests have yet been made and police do not believe the killing was gang-related.

The victim has been described as an "extrovert" who was "fun to be around". Charlie's ex-girlfriend Isabella Singer said she was "so devastated" and "kept crying".

One of his friends Jodeci Joseph described the victim as a "very nice boy" with "very good intentions".

Charlie was energetic, an extrovert, very happy and a fun guy to be around, he added.

Forensics officers have recovered two knives from near the scene, one a silver kitchen knife and the other a black-handled knife, but it is not yet clear whether either was involved in the stabbing.

The killing is being investigated by the Homicide and DCI Ken Hughes, leading the inquiry, said: "There were around 100 young people at this party and we are appealing for anyone with information or any witnesses to come forward as soon as possible.

"The victim's family are naturally devastated and in shock by what has happened and we need the help of those at the party that night to progress our investigation."

It is the first murder of a teenager in the capital this year, Scotland Yard said.

19 teenagers were murdered in London in 2015. 15 were stabbed to death, two others were strangled, one suffered head injuries and one died from "other" causes.
