Security camera footage shows a man approach Cherish Perrywinkle's mother, Rayne Perrywinkle, who was shopping with her three daughters.
8-yr-old girl abducted, raped and killed
A man raped and killed an eight-year-old girl after befriending the little girl's family.
Rayne claims that a man she identifies as Donald Smith, then 56, approached her while she was struggling to afford clothing for her children and offered to help her out.
The man even offered to buy burgers for the family, taking Cherish with him to a McDonald’s.
But he never returned with her, and was instead seen putting her into a van. It was the last time she was seen alive.
Rayne’s 911 call, made after she realised her daughter was missing, was also released by the State Attourney’s office.
In it, she told the operator: ‘Maybe he was grooming her. I hope to God he doesn’t kill her and I hope to God he doesn’t rape her.’
Fox News reports that the police response was delayed because officers were sceptical about the call, and alerts were not released for hours.
Cherish’s body was found the day after outside Highlands Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Donald Smith, who was 56 at the time of the killing in 2013, has been charged with Cherish’s murder.
Smith, a registered sex offender, had previous convictions for attempted kidnapping, indecent assault on a child and selling obscene materials.
He is due in court next month.
