Nobody thinks about it but lugging a suitcase around when you're travelling or commuting can be serious work. They could get lost, damaged, and really heavy to carry around.

Travelmate Robotics, a company based in San Francisco, has decided to solve the suitcase problem by developing a smart suitcase with interesting autonomous features baked in.

The Travelmate suitcase is fully autonomous, per the company's Indiegogo page, and can integrate with your smartphone to accomplish complex tasks.

The suitcase can also move vertically or horizontally and navigate through crowds by being able to recognize objects and obstacles. You can also place other luggage on the suitcase and it will carry them around for you.

The suitcase also has USB ports that can be used to charge devices, a GPS system that can be used to track it if it gets lost, an alarm system, LED lighting that double as turn indicators, Omni wheels that allow for multi-directional movement, and a removable battery that can be charged wirelessly.

Travelmate Robotics say the suitcase functions as a robot in practice and uses AI and machine learning to optimise its movements.

The suitcase can be controlled via a smartphone app that will get updates as the suitcase learns from use. It has a 4-hour battery life when in autonomous mode and 100 hours of standby power.

It also has a touch-enabled smart lock system that uses your fingerprint to open the suitcase and a manual setup if that is not your thing.

According to the suitcase's Indiegogo page, Travelmate Robotics, the company behind the smart suitcase, already has a working prototype but is raising funds for commercial scale production and setup of distribution channels.

The suitcase costs $399 when you preorder and shipping is expected to be sometime this year.
