Annual tech exhibition kicks off today

The annual Mobile World Congress has kicked off in Barcelona, Spain where many products will be unveiled

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is a combination of the world's largest exhibition for the mobile industry and a conference featuring prominent executives representing mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors and content owners from across the world.

All the big names (except Apple) will be launching their new flagship phones, smartwatches and tablets.

Samsung, HTC, Sony, Microsoft and Blackberry are expected to unveil their new products this year.

Among the big themes this year will be '5G, the faster wireless internet successor to 4G, and the challenges bringing the developing world online'.

Executives from Twitter, Facebook,Pinterest and Airbnb will ensure that the rise of social media remains a talking point.

The event, initially named as GSM World Congress and later renamed as the 3GSM World Congress, is still often referred to as 3GSM or 3GSM World.

The Mobile World Congress usually takes place in February but the 2015 edition will be the first week of March.

The annual attendance is generally between 70,000-80,000 people; attendees represent more than 200 countries from across the globe.
