The government immediately ordered the closure of the school after it was revealed that the students are being served expired foods since the beginning of the year.

A source speaking to Today said, “The food supplied to the students since resumption are expired ones, while some stored grains, such as beans, guinea corn and other perishables were of old stock, and could be the cause of the outbreak.”

Students have been complaining about the state of the food but no action was taken. Some of them, to save their lives, have reportedly stopped eating the food served in the school when they found it to be unhealthy.

One student said he gave up on the school food “so I decided to tell my parents to supply me with food from home.”

The state Information and Culture Commissioner, Alhaji Umar Bukkuyum, speaking on the dead and seriously ill students, confirmed that they are dealing with a major outbreak whose cause is still unknown.

He said: “Nobody can exactly say what the real cause of this calamity was. We can only talk on an issue that we know, so we will not make mistakes.”

Bukkuyum said the state government had already constituted a committee which was shouldered with the responsibility of finding out the actual cause of the disease and the subsequent death of the two students.
