Seye Ogunlewe finished fourth in the 100m event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Seye was given a message of encouragement by the president as he and compatriot Enoch Adegoke were preparing for their 100m final race in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The President showed support for Ogunlewe and Adegoke through a message on the official Twitter account of the Presidency of Nigeria.
The message said, “Congratulations to @seyeogunlewe and Enoch Adegoke, who have made it to the 100m men’s final at the Commonwealth Games. All of Nigeria is behind you, as you fly the Nigerian flag on Monday.”
Seye Ogunlewe and his compatriot, however, could not make a podium finish as Adegoke finished seventh with a time of 10.35s, while Ogunlewe controversially finished fourth after clocking the same time (10.19s) with Yohan Blake who finished third.
In response to the President's tweet, Ogunlewe thanked the president for his kind words and also urged him to invest more in Nigerian athletes.
The statement said, “Thank you, your Excellency! Invest more in us so we can do greater things. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Ogunlewe and his sprint teammates will now hope to put the individual medal disappointment behind them when they compete in the 4x100m relay event.
