The Washington Redskins have confirmed that Robert Griffin III has been benched as the team's starting quarterback.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced on Wednesday that Colt McCoy will start against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, following media speculation earlier in the week.
RGIII did not distinguish himself last Sunday as the Redskins lost to the San Francisco 49ers.
He was 11-for-19 for 106 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Washington have posted an 0-3 win-loss record since Griffin's return from a dislocated ankle suffered in week two.
McCoy has played in two games this season for Washington, starting one, and led the Redskins to victories in both contests.
"The reports are accurate: Colt is going to start this week at quarterback," Gruden said Wednesday in a conference call with the Indianapolis-area media reported on the team's official website.
"We're going to play Colt. He's done some good things in his time as a starter. I felt like he deserved a bit of a promotion."
