The top male seeds continued to avoid problems at Melbourne Park, with Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych among the winners.
Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych progressed to the Australian Open third round without dropping a set on Wednesday, while Roger Federer also advanced.
Berdych was given an early test before beating Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 6-2 on a hot Melbourne day.
Melzer, a former world number eight who had to qualify for the main draw, served for the first set but was broken.
It was all Berdych from then on as the Czech seventh seed hit 36 winners on his way to what proved a comfortable victory.
Berdych will meet Viktor Troicki after the Serbian overcame Argentine 26th seed Leonardo Mayer 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-0.
Murray breezed through, crushing Marinko Matosevic in straight sets.
Murray, the Brit sixth seed, was the beneficiary of an error-riddled performance by the Australian on Margaret Court Arena.
From the moment he raced through the first set in 21 minutes, Murray was never likely to be troubled and he eased to a 6-1 6-3 6-2 victory.
Murray's next opponent is Joao Sousa, the Portuguese right-hander leading Martin Klizan 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 1-0 when the Slovakian 32nd seed retired.
Klizan looked affected by the heat during the match, and called it quits when he was broken in the fourth set.
Despite pain in his right hand " perhaps from being stung by a bee " Federer eventually eased past Simone Bolelli.
The Swiss 17-time grand slam champion endured early worries before claiming a 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over Bolelli.
Next up for Federer is Italian Andreas Seppi, who defeated French 29th seed Jeremy Chardy 7-5 3-6 6-2 6-1.
Runner-up in 2006, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis reached the third round with an upset win over David Goffin.
The Belgian 20th seed was favourite, but Baghdatis hit 44 winners in a 6-1 6-4 4-6 6-0 victory.
Next for Baghdatis is Grigor Dimitrov after the Bulgarian 10th seed beat Lukas Lacko 6-3 6-7 (10-12) 6-3 6-3.
Seeds Ivo Karlovic (23) and Lukas Rosol (28) were both bundled out.
Big-serving Croatian Karlovic lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 5-7 6-4 to local favourite Nick Kyrgios, while Czech Rosol was beaten by Israeli Dudi Sela 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 7-5 6-3 after almost three hours on court.
There was better news for Kevin Anderson and Richard Gasquet, who set up a third-round clash.
South Africa's Anderson was too good for Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-3), while Frenchman Gasquet beat local James Duckworth 6-2 6-3 7-5.
Tunisian Malek Jaziri upstaged Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 1-6 6-3 6-4 1-6 6-3.
