Tiger Woods said he has made progress since his horrendous U.S. Open, and is looking forward to righting his worst performance at a major.

Woods went around 80-76 at Chambers Bay, missing the cut by 11 shots - and finishing ahead of just three other pros among those that completed 36 holes.

The 14-time major winner continually found the rough at the tough Washington state course, and notably produced a shot along the ground on the fairway late in his second round.

Woods, however, has bounced back - posting a two-under front nine in the pro-am ahead of the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia - and said he is feeling optimistic of producing when the PGA Tour event begins on Thursday.

"I drove it great today and made some nice progress since the Open," Woods said on Wednesday.

"It's hard to believe I was that far [away] at the Open but I really wasn't.

"I had a few little injuries going on there that week I was playing through.

"On top of that, playing a golf course that is as interesting as that place was.

"If you missed a shot you could look like an absolute idiot there and then you hit an awful shot and you look like a hero.

"It's just one of those weird golf courses. You had to play it well, you had to play it smart.

"You had to be aggressive and pick your spots and I wasn't in a position where I was hitting it good enough to be able to do that."

Woods has only once previously played at the Greenbrier Classic, missing the cut in 2012 - and said his improvement would mean little if he did not put up solid numbers at Old White TPC.

"I made a bit of progress since the last time I played. Obviously it's not really saying much," the 39-year-old said.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to competing again and getting out there and playing."
