The Tampa Bay Lightning edged the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 after the NHL's first ever three-on-three overtime.

Jason Garrison was the overtime hero with his second goal of the game at the Amalie Arena on Thursday.

Both teams had their chances in the fast-paced OT, but Garrison delivered two minutes, 17 seconds in.

He had also opened the scoring, but goals from Matt Read and Brayden Schenn " the latter in a power-play " had the Flyers ahead.

Ryan Callahan also scored in a power-play as all four goals came in the second period.

In his Dallas Stars debut, goaltender Antti Niemi shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins to lead his team to a 3-0 win.

Niemi also had two assists, with Mattias Janmark, Ales Hemsky and Jamie Benn scoring for the Stars.

Jack Eichel enjoyed a goalscoring debut, but his Buffalo Sabres went down to the Ottawa Senators 3-1.

Eichel, the second pick in the 2015 NHL draft, scored in a third-period power-play, but Kyle Turris' double had set up the Senators' win.

The top pick in the draft, Connor McDavid, also had a losing debut as the Edmonton Oilers suffered a 3-1 loss to the St Louis Blues.

Zach Parise scored a hat-trick in the Minnesota Wild's hard-fought 5-4 victory against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Winnipeg Jets had six different goalscorers in a 6-2 win over the Boston Bruins and the Nashville Predators edged the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1.
