John Tortorella's reign as Columbus Blue Jackets coach opened with a 3-2 loss to Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

Tortorella replaced Todd Richards on Wednesday after the latter paid the price for seven consecutive defeats to open the NHL season.

The appointment of Tortorella could not inspire the Blue Jackets, however, as the Wild inflicted more pain.

Columbus led 2-1 after the first period but now has the second-longest losing streak to start an NHL season (the 1943-44 New York Rangers lost 11 in a row).

Keith Yandle scored against his former team as the New York Rangers claimed a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

Yandle played for the Coyotes for eight years but was traded to the Rangers in March of this year.

The Coyotes held a 1-0 lead midway through the contest but conceded four goals from the second period.

Arizona had won their first three games of the season but the loss to the Rangers means they have suffered four consecutive defeats, including three in regulation.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils claimed a 5-4 shoot-out win over the Ottawa Senators.

Lee Stempniak scored with 32 seconds remaining in the third period and then in the shoot-out to secure the victory.

In other results, the Dallas Stars defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 and reigning Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks edged past the Florida Panthers 3-2.

Ryan Ellis scored one goal and set up two others to lead the Nashville Predators to a 5-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

The Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin scored his 81st game-winner in a 3-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks, while the Los Angeles Kings defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-1.
