New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia has been suspended for 162 games after testing positive to a performance-enhancing drug for a second time.

Mejia tested positive for synthetic anabolic steroids Stanozolol and Boldenone, according to MLB.

He had already served an 80-game suspension this season without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol in April.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson had mixed emotions after hearing about the news.

"Not surprisingly, there's a tremendous amount of disappointment," he said.

"I think to some extent, anger. To some extent, amazement that this could happen so soon after a previous suspension was completed. And some sadness, in the sense that this is having a tremendously adverse effect on a very promising Major League career. And that's a shame."

The failed drug test comes one day after the Mets acquired reliever Tyler Clippard and cash from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Casey Meisner.

The 25-year-old Mejia was productive last season after moving to the bullpen, posting a 2.72 ERA.

Mejia's 162-game ban is tied for the longest suspension in MLB history, joining New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez.
