Alex de Angelis is "alert and conscious" as his condition continues to stabilise following a heavy crash during practice at the Japanese MotoGP.

The E-Motion IodaRacing Team rider was airlifted to Dokkyo Hospital on Saturday after suffering multiple rib and vertebrae fractures, as well as a lung contusion, having crashed between turns nine and 10.

De Angelis " who also suffered intercranial bleeding " was sedated and placed in intensive care following scans in Japan, but regained the ability to speak on Monday.

And his minor improvements have continued, with his team issuing a statement confirming the 31-year-old was now critical but stable.

"The clinical condition of Alex De Angelis is stable," the statement read. "De Angelis spent the night well without any complications.

"From yesterday, De Angelis is no longer sedated and is alert and conscious.

"In the next few days [doctors] will repeat the MRI to check the intracranial hematoma " which has not changed since its appearance in the examinations and scans.

"That currently does not require the intervention of the neurosurgeon."
