Five-time MLB All-Star outfielder Torii Hunter announced his retirement on Monday.

Hunter, 40, is hanging up his cleats after 19 seasons in the majors, including 12 with the Minnesota Twins.

"I've been married to the game 23 years," Hunter said in an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"I put it almost No. 1 in my life. My family kind of second. I made sacrifices for my family. And now it is time to give them more time."

Hunter, who will not hold a formal news conference to announce his retirement, is expected to take some time off before deciding his next move.

He had addressed the team on October 3, telling his team-mates and coaches he was 80 per cent certain he was finished with baseball.

A nine-time Gold Glove Award winner, Hunter was a first-round pick of the Twins in 1993 and spent the first 11 seasons of his career in Minnesota.

He had brief stints with the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers before re-joining the Twins last off-season, while he batted .240/.293/.409 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs over 139 games this season.

"I thank the Angels for adopting me and making me part of the Angels family, all the team-mates I had over there," Hunter said. "The Angels fans, love them. There's the Tigers organization, Mr. [Mike] Ilitch and their fans.

"But most of all, the Minnesota Twins fans and organization. The Polhads, Terry Ryan, the coaching staff. Ron Gardenhire, Tom Kelly. I thank those guys for showing me how to take responsibility, how to carry yourself. The Twins fans, you can"t beat them. That"s my family. The city is my love."

Hunter will end his lengthy career with a .277/.331/.461 batting line in addition to 353 home runs, 1,391 RBIs, and 195 steals. He made eight post-season appearances, though he never reached a World Series.
