World number 14 Feliciano Lopez suffered a surprise defeat to Jordan Thompson at the Kooyong Classic on Thursday.
Feliciano Lopez missed out on the chance to get a win on the board ahead of next week's Australian Open as he suffered a surprise defeat at the Kooyong Classic on Thursday.
The second day of action at the Melbourne suburb - Tuesday's play was washed out - saw the four players who lost on Wednesday return to action.
And 20-year-old Australian Jordan Thompson, beaten by Kei Nishikori 24 hours earlier, made the most of a second opportunity to impress as he defeated world number 14 Lopez - a player 259 places above him in the ATP rankings - 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.
James Ward looked set to provide another shock when he took the first set against John Isner in a subsequent invitational match.
However, Isner battled through a mammoth tie-break in the second set before easing through the decider to claim a 3-6 7-6 (12-10) 6-2 victory.
Thursday's other encounter saw Gilles Simon record a 6-4 6-3 victory over Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.
The tournament concludes on Friday, with the winners of Wednesday's matches back on court.
Alexandr Dolgopolov and Fernando Verdasco will meet in the final, having triumphed in straight sets in their opening matches, while Nishikori faces Richard Gasquet.
