Newly appointed Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio believes the "foundation" is in place for the embattled NFL franchise to return to winning ways.

Del Rio was officially introduced to the media on Friday, a day after taking the reins from interim coach Tony Sparano.

The Raiders - without a post-season appearance since 2002 - are one of the least successful teams in recent years.

After winning Super Bowl championships in 1976, 1980 and 1983, the Raiders have won just 56 games and lost 136 in 12 seasons following their 3-13 run in 2014.

But Del Rio is not daunted by the task at hand, insisting there is enough at his disposal to see the Raiders back to the NFL summit.

"I've been a Raider fan all my life," Del Rio told reporters. "That's not the main reason I came back.

"I was blessed with this opportunity and agreed to take this job because of a lot of factors. It starts with knowing there is good leadership in place that I believe I can work with, that we can build this team."

Del Rio added: "This is an organisation that has been an excellent organisation for a number of years, and it's fallen on some hard times recently, but the foundation is in place for us to be great again.

"It's up to us. I want to empower the players in the locker room to be accountable to be able to step forward, to take the team, to take the torch and to build this thing great again.

"We've got a lot of work to do and I'm excited to be here and excited to get started."
