Detroit Tigers movel level at the summit in AL Central, Los Angeles Angels extend winning streak

Max Scherzer starred as the Detroit Tigers joined Kansas City Royals atop the American League Central division on Tuesday.

Scherzer allowed one run on seven hits and struck out six batters to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 win over the Royals in MLB action.

With the bases loaded, Scherzer walked Gordon and the retired the next two batters in a dominant performance as he improved to 16-5.

JD Martinez and Rajai Davis both homered for the Tigers, who are now tied with the Royals in AL Central after back-to-back wins against the Kansas City franchise.

"We have the talent in this clubhouse to get it done," said Scherzer.

"We can play with anybody in baseball and we can beat anybody in baseball - when we play our A-game. I thought we played our A-game tonight."

The Los Angeles Angels continued their red-hot form, defeating the lowly Texas Rangers 9-3.

Collin Cowgill had three RBIs, while Kole Calhoun hit his 15th home run as the Angels extended their winning streak to six games.

The Angels - top of the AL West - are eight games clear of the Oakland Athletics, who routed the Chicago White Sox 11-2.

Jose Bautista produced the goods as the in-form Toronto Blue Jays crushed the Chicago Cubs 9-2.

Bautista hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the seventh inning to inspire Toronto to a third consecutive win.

The Baltimore Orioles remain in control of the AL East ahead of the Blue Jays after downing the Boston Red Sox 4-1.

In other results, Oswaldo Arcia had a hit-run homer in the Minnesota Twins' 4-3 victory against the Cleveland Indians.

The San Francisco Giants upstaged the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1, while the Washington Nationals overcame the Atlanta Braves 6-4.

Casey McGehee and Marcell Ozuna both hit homers as the Miami Marlins triumphed 6-3 over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The San Diego Padres ended their six-game winless streak with a 6-3 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Elsewhere, the New York Mets shutout the Colorado Rockies for a 2-0 win.

The New York Yankees were beaten 4-3 by the Tampa Bay Rays and Maikel Franco lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the same scoreline.

A run in the ninth inning saw the Houston Astros to a 2-1 win against the Seattle Mariners, while the Cincinnati Reds led from start to finish as they beat the St Louis Cardinals 9-5.
