New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner is out of his side's tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa after fracturing his thumb.

Santner, 23, suffered the injury while trying to field off his own bowling during training in Christchurch on Monday.

George Worker will replace Santner in the squad, who face Zimbabwe in three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 before five limited-overs matches against South Africa.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson was disappointed Santner, who has played five ODIs and a T20 for his nation, would miss.

We feel for Mitch because he was really excited about this tour and we were looking forward to seeing him continue his development in international cricket," he said.

It is unfortunate but at the same time it presents George with his first opportunity in the Black Caps environment and we are confident that he"ll fit in well."
