Australia paceman Mitchell Johnson is back to his fast and destructive best, according to team-mate Adam Voges.

Johnson, 33, saw his speed drop during Australia's 2-0 series win over India in December and January.

The left-armer has said the shock death of Phillip Hughes in November had an impact.

But Johnson is seemingly back to his best ahead of the Ashes series against England starting Wednesday.

Johnson terrorised England during the 2013-14 series in Australia, taking 37 wickets at an average of 13.97.

"Our net sessions aren't much fun at all at the moment. He"s got his zip back, he's bowling fast and he's swinging them as well," Voges said.

"We saw him hit Shaun [Marsh] on the hand, and Steve Smith ended up on his backside by the stumps, so he's as ready to go as he possibly can be.

"I think Mitch will go into this series extremely confident with what he did in the last Ashes series and so he should."

Johnson and Voges are two of nine players aged 30 or older in Australia's 17-man squad.

But Voges has no doubts the group is ready for a five-Test series.

"There's no point tiptoeing around it. We've got a number of guys who are over 30," he said.

"That does bring experience, but I think in today's game we are a lot stronger, a lot fitter.

"Physically, we are a little bit older, but I can't see that being an issue throughout the series.

"We train incredibly hard and we are all fit guys. If we didn't think we could get through five Tests, we wouldn't be here."
