Emiliano Grillo fired a bogey-free eight-under 64 to take a one-shot lead at the Canadian Open on Thursday.

The Argentine holed eight birdies - four on the front nine and four on the back - in an impressive display at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario.

Fresh from finishing tied for 10th at the Barbasol Championship, Grillo took his good form to Canada.

He is a shot clear of Americans Vaughn Taylor and Brian Harman, who both holed a bogey apiece to be behind.

Australian amateur Ryan Ruffels, Americans Erik Compton and Steve Wheatcroft and South African Tyrone Van Aswegen are at six under.

World number nine Jason Day, coming off another near-miss at a major, is at four under and tied for 17th.

Day did produce one of the shots of the day, holing out for eagle with an approach to the 10th.

It was an Australian at the other end of the leaderboard also making headlines.

Robert Allenby carded a nine-over 81 to be tied for last - alongside amateur Garrett Rank - before withdrawing.

During his round, the 44-year-old fired his caddie after a disagreement over club selection.

Grillo started his day on the back nine and with a birdie, before further birdies at the 13th, 15th and 18th.

He holed another four on the front nine to take a lead into Friday.

Taylor's only blemish came on the par-three 12th, while Harman's was at the 14th as they both put together good rounds.

A group of nine players are tied for eighth at five under, including Robert Garrigus and Jim Herman.

Defending champion Tim Clark could only manage an even-par 72 to be tied for 88th.
