The Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) has launched a bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games in Budapest.

Budapest join Rome, Paris, Hamburg and Boston in hoping to stage the sporting showpiece after the MOB gave its unanimous backing last month and the organisation's chairman Zsolt Borkai, along with Budapest's mayor Istvan Tarlos, confirmed the bid in a letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach.

"The city of Budapest and the Hungarian Olympic Committee wish to participate in the application and bidding process with the aim of selecting the host city of the 2024 Olympics," the letter read.

It went on to say that Hungary are the sole nation among the top 10 most successful Summer Olympic countries yet to stage the Games.

"We also welcome that the IOC is orienting itself to a more economical and sustainable organisation of the Olympic Games, by that breaking the monopoly of the largest and wealthiest countries as hosts," the letter added.

The deadline to submit bids is September 15, with a decision set to be made in 2017.
