Super Falcons Nigeria beat Cameroon to win 2016 Women’s AFCON title

The Super Falcons of Nigeria beat the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon by a lone goal  on Saturday, December 3 to win the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

Desire Oparanozie netted the winner for the Super Falcons in the 85th minute to hand Nigeria their 10th AWCON title.

The forward also scored in the 2014 AWCON final also against Cameroon.

 

Two of these titles were won when the tournament was played in a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers format while eight was won in the proper AWCON tourneys.

The Cameroonians dominated the opening minutes at the packed 40, 000 capacity Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde.

Fans’ favourite Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene and Michele Ngono Mani missed several goal scoring chances for Cameroon.

In the 34th minute Ngono Mani was one on one with Nigeria goalie Alaba Jonathan but could not hit the target.

Les Lionnes also started the second half the better side before the Super Falcons gradually grew into the game.

After an uneventful period, Cameroon captain Christine Manie clearance felled to Oparanozie who controlled nicely before firing past Cameroon goalie Annette Ngo Ndom for the match winner.

Nigeria have now beaten Cameroon three times in the AWCON final-2004, 2014 and 2016.
