The 35-year-old was said to have avoided paying tax through an illegal image right structure.
Eto’o reportedly ran two companies — Bulte 2002 in Spain and Tradesport in Hungary — where he diverted his image rights to.
The former Cameroon international also did not pay taxes from around £2m he received annually from Puma around that time.
Prosecutors are demanding he be fined around £12m and also a 10-year-prision term.
Eto’o is the latest player connected to Barcelona to have been accused of tax crimes.
Neymar is currently on trial for avoiding tax for money he received when he signed for Barcelona.
Lionel Messi was sentenced to a 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud while defender, Javier Mascherano in January, was sentenced to a combined 12-month prison term for two separate tax offences.
