Roberto Carlos Brazil legend sentenced to 3 months in prison for failure to pay child support

Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has been given a three-month prison term in his country for failure to pay child support to one of his ex-partners who has two children for him.

Carlos has nine children; he has two with his current wife, three from his first and the rest with his former partners.

Rio de Janeiro courts were told that the 44-year-old is owing 61,000 Brazilian real (approximately N5.5M) to Barbara Thurler.

According to Spanish news agency Efe, Carlos claimed he has not been able to make payments to Thurler because of financial difficulties he was facing and offered to pay the money in instalments.

Judge Mayane de Castro, however, sentenced him to three months in prison after finding him guilty.

His lawyer Fernando Pittner is however optimistic that the former Real Madrid defender would resolve the issue and not need to go to jail.

Known as one of the best left-backs in football history, Carlos enjoyed lots of successes with Brazil and Real Madrid.

He won one FIFA World Cup title with Brazil in 2002 and three Champions League with Real Madrid.
