Godspower Kokoriko Popular football figure dies in Port Harcourt

Also known as ‘Soccer Fire’, Kokoriko lived all his life in Port Harcourt and was a notable figure around stadiums.

Football enthusiast in Port Harcourt and the whole of Niger Delta is mourning the death of one of its most popular figures, Godswill Kokoriko.

Kokoriko is a huge football man, known to be a huge supporter of the old Dolphins and Sharks FC of Port Harcourt.

A huge promoter and supporter of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPLF) Kokoriko was the stadium announcer of Rivers United FC just before his death.

Also known as ‘Soccer Fire’ the Bayelsa-born sports promoter lived all his life in Port Harcourt and was a notable figure around stadiums.

He was known for his passionate commentaries during Dolphins and Sharks FC league games in Port Harcourt.

According to reports, Kokoriko died in the early hours of Friday, May 19.

Details of his death are still very sketchy.

Before his death, he was also the National President of United Youths Sports Federation of Nigeria (UYSFON).

If you played or watched football in Port Harcourt and the Niger Delta, you'd know chief Godspower Kokoriko. He passed on a few hours ago,” popular Nigerian sports journalist, China Acheru‏ wrote on his Twitter.


Kokoriko was also a huge advocate of the youth, initiating campaigns that use sports to drive empowerment programs for the Niger Delta youths.

A slew of tributes for the late football promoter have been seen on Facebook.

This is indeed sorrowful...RIP the great football lover, a man who knew what grassroot football was all about,I could recall countless number of times the megaphone ducked in his car made us trooped outta the street in numbers to see him announce with passion the upcoming local league matches..The least I know about Him was that he did his job with so much enthusiasm.. RIP Kokoriko,” another Facebook user Godswill Agbaraks wrote.
