Mercy Akide-Udoh Super Falcons legend bemoans unfair treatment of African champions

Super Falcons legend Mercy Akide-Udoh has waded into the non-payment of allowances and bonuses to the current players and coaches.

The Super Falcons on Saturday, December 3 beat host Cameroon to lift the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) title.

After the victory, it has been revealed that the squad has not been paid their allowances and bonuses dating back to the qualifiers of the 2016 AWCON. 

The Super Falcons have launched a sit-in protest at the Agura Hotel in Abuja and are refusing to leave until the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) settle the debts.

Reacting to the unfortunate development, Akide-Udoh said this incident would discourage players from representing Nigeria.

It's sad to be promised something & not get it. You should be paid for working," the 41-year-old former striker told BBC Sports.

"We're not encouraging kids with dual citizenship. If my kids get a chance to play for the U.S I'd encourage them.

“It's not a good story. I understand NFF have financial problems. Players and NFF don't need this negativity."

Akide-Udoh played for the Super Falcons in three FIFA Women's World Cups and also helped the Super Falcons to three AWCON titles- 1998, 2000 and 2002.
