Fabian Delph is set to join Manchester City just a week after rejecting a move away from Aston Villa
Manchester City have announced the signing of midfielder Fabian Delph on a five-year-contract.
The surprise signing was announced just a week after the midfielder turned down an offer from Manchester City.
The midfielder last Friday, July 10 in response to Manchester City interest in him released a statement committing himself to Aston Villa.
"I'm aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight," the midfielder said.
"I'm not leaving. I'm staying at the football club and I can't wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club."
Just a week later, the England international changed his mind and started talks with the Citizens.
"Aston Villa can confirm that Fabian Delph has exercised the release clause in his contract and will join Manchester City," a shocking statement on Aston Villa website yesterday reads.
"We'd like to wish him success in his future career."
The midfielder was ready to led the Aston Villa side this season as he was part of the campaign for the club's new away kit which was recently unveiled.
Delph was pictured at the Wilmslow Hospital on Friday afternoon where he reportedly held his medicals aeahd of the remarkable move and minutes later the move was confirmed.
"Manchester City are delighted to announce Fabian Delph has joined the club from Aston Villa," a statement on their official Twitter account reads.
He will be the second addition to the Manchester City squad after the signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool and coach Manuel Pellegrini has expressed his delight in the capture of the 25-year-old.
“Fabian Delph is an excellent player, and I am looking forward to working with him," Pellegrini told the Manchester City official website.
“He has made a huge impact in recent seasons at Aston Villa, and is now one of the brightest young midfielders in the Premier League.
“Fabian has tremendous skill and energy, and the fact that he has become a regular member of the England squad is further evidence of his progress over the past few seasons. At just 25 years old, he still has his best years ahead of him.”
Manchester City's capture of Delph could also end the pursuit of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
Delph will wear the No.18 shirt for City.
