Chapecoense Real Brazilian club named Copa Sudamericana champions after fatal plane crash

Brazilian club side Chapecoense Real have been named Copa Sudamericana champions after losing almost their entire team in a plane crash.

Chapecoense Real lost almost their entire team when the plane there were travelling in crashed in Medellin, Colombia on Monday, November 28.

The team was on their way to the first leg final of the Copa Sudamericana against Atletico Nacional of Colombia when the fatal plane crash happened.

After the crash, Atletico National sent a request to South American football confederation CONMEBOL to hand the title which the association have agreed to.

CONMEBOL on Monday, December 5 agreed to award the Copa Sudamericana to Chapecoense.

"CONMEBOL awards the title for the 2016 Copa Sudamericana championship to Chapecoense," the confederation said in a statement.

Brazil Serie A clubs have also offered to loan players to the club for free and also asked the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to exempt them of relegation for three years.
