No Confederation of African Football (CAF) president can spend more than three terms in office as a result of a new limit which has been set.

Current president Issa Hayatou has held the office for 28 years (seven terms) but he will be the last to get past three.

This is because of a new ruling was approved at the CAF congress which on Thursday, September 29 in Cairo.

The new ruling states from next year’s election in March 2017, no president can stay more than three terms.

This follows FIFA’s similar ruling in February which is aimed to recover from the corruption crisis that rocked the Federation.

The main reason for this amendment of Caf statutes was to align them with Fifa ones. But more reforms and amendment can be expected,Junior Binyam, CAF’s media spokesman told BBC Sport.

play Issa Hayatou has not confirmed if he will contest the next election

Hayatou is qualified to contest the next election as he is allowed to extend his current tenure by a maximum of 12 years.

He is also allowed to contest after CAF voted in 2015 to change the ruling which previously stopped officials serving past the age of 70.

He has yet to announce if he will contest the election.
