Africa Cup Of Nations CAF increase prize money ahead of Gabon 2017

Ahead of the next AFCON in Gabon, CAF have announced that the winners will get $4.5m from the previous sum of $1.5m.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have increased the prize money of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAF).

Ahead of the next AFCON in Gabon, CAF have announced that the winners will get $4.5m from the previous sum of $1.5m.

The new increment was as a result of a new deal with French multinational oil group, Total.

With the new deal which was signed in July, Total is now in charge of sponsoring all tournament hosted by CAF.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Total reached an agreement today under which the Group will become the official sponsor of African football for the next eight years,” CAF said in a statement.

Runners up of AFCON will receive $2m-a 100% increase from the previous prize- while semifinalist will get $1.5m, up from $750,000, and quarter-finalists pocket $800,000, $200,000 more than in the past.

Third place finishers in the group stage will get $575,000, up from $500,000, while bottom-placed sides would now receive $475,000, an increase from $400,000.

In total, CAF will be giving out the sum of $16.4m up from $10 million.

The increment also extended to other CAF competitions like Champions League where winners will get $2.5m, up from $1.5m, while the Confederation Cup prize money will become $1.25m, up from $660,000.
