Yaya Toure set the record for the most honoured African footballer when he was announced as the best player on the continent last Thursday, January 8 in Lagos at the GLO-CAF Awards.

The 31 year-old Manchester City attacking midfielder has been in the Nations Cup with the Elephants since the 2006 edition in Egypt 2006 when he was just 22 year-old plying his trade for Olympiacos of Greece.

Since then, he has never missed out of the tournament with the Elephants.

His exploits with the national team at the tournament, playing all the way to the final before losing to hosts and eventual winners, Egypt; opened him up to interests from bigger European clubs beginning with AS Monaco.

Just a year at Monaco, he caught the fancy of Barcelona which would later become the height of his career before moving over to the Manchester City.

Toure will captain the Ivorians at the tournament which kicks off tomorrow, January 17 in Equatorial Guinea and again the country stands the chance of winning its second AFCON title since 1992 with the absence of powerhouse, Nigeria.

Cote D'Ivoire begin their race for a second AFCON title against Guinea on January 20 with Mali and Cameroon to follow on the 24th and 28th respectively.
