Just seven weeks remain in Ligue 1 and we saw a very cagey week of results last weekend. Only two teams managed to score more than a single goal in all the league matches!

In the Coupe de la Ligue final we saw PSG demolish Monaco 4-1 to lift the trophy for a remarkable fourth year in a row. Perhaps the most interesting result last week was bottom of the table Lorient winning their second game in a row to move them off the foot of the table and just one point from safety.

With just four points separating the bottom four teams and two teams automatically relegated, it really is a great time to go on a good streak. Can Lorient keep their run going? Bastia slipped to the bottom of Ligue 1 and we can’t see them turning things around anytime soon.

There are some cracking games this week featuring the bottom clubs, and relegation places could all change depending on results.

At the top of the table, Monaco and PSG missed Ligue action due to the cup final but third placed Nice had a big win against Bordeaux, coming from behind to win. That moved them within a point of PSG and four behind Monaco… although the top two have a game in hand.

SportyNews takes a look at the games featured in the Colossus Bets Ligue 1 Millionaire pool with a jackpot of N200 million.

Angers v Monaco (Sat 4:00 pm)

Angers were the team in form until recently, when they’ve lost two of their last three matches. That ended a five match winning streak, which saw them escape the relegation zone and into the relative safety of 12th place in the table.

They face a Monaco side who are on tremendous form in the league and will be looking to take their “anger” (get it?!) out on someone following their hammering in the cup final last week.

The Angers defence can be described as steady but their forward line is lacklustre. They average just 1.03 goals per game and that won’t be enough to trouble the free scoring Monaco outfit. Monaco average under 3 goals per match and concede less than

1. That’s threatening, for Angers. Add to that, the importance of Monaco claiming all three points and we only really see one result here. Playing away from home won’t deter Monaco who have put eleven goals past their opponents in the last four games.

This is the banker of the week. Monaco to win, and win well.

Caen v Montpellier (Sat 7:00 pm)
This looks like being a superb match to watch, whether you are a fan or an impartial spectator. Montpellier and Caen sit 15th and 16th in Ligue 1 respectively. A loss for either side could drag them right into the thick of the relegation battle. However, a win could see either team pull clear and open a gap on the rest with an excellent chance of surviving the drop. This is sure to be a very nervy affair!

Both these teams are slack at the back but Montpellier do score more goals. The last time the teams met Montpellier won 3-2. Neither team is in any sort of decent form so we expect a close game. Montpellier were shut out last week for the first time in eleven league matches but we expect them to bounce right back with goals here. Caen will make home advantage count and also net goals against a weak defence.

This should see goals for both teams and a score draw looks a choice pick. Perhaps we could see a similar 3-2 score line as in the last match but for who? It’s anyone’s game.

Dijon v Bastia (Sat 7:00 pm)
Dijon v Bastia throws up another dogfight at the root of the table. Bastia are in shocking form and sit rock bottom but Dijon are only four points above them in 17th position. A win for Bastia would be like Christmas! The problem Bastia have is that they just aren’t scoring goals.

They only have 24 goals from 31 matches this season, whilst letting in 45 at the other end. It’s no surprise they sit bottom of the table.

Last time these two teams met Bastia failed to score… but they managed to claim a 0-0 draw. Dijon also have a shaky defence, but offensively they are much more of a threat and boast the eighth best frontline in Ligue 1.

Although Dijon are also out of form, without a win in their last six matches, they did take a much needed point last week away to fifth place Marseille. They should be able to confound Bastia’s misery with the home advantage and take Bastia’s winless streak to a colossal 14 matches.

Dijon to win by the odd goal.

Nancy v Rennes (Sat 7:00 pm)

This is an interesting game on Saturday evening, as we see Nancy host Rennes. Nancy are desperate for points as they currently occupy 18th position in Ligue 1, just one point from safety. They have the dubious honour of having the worst defence in the league by a clear margin and not enough firepower to even it out.

They have drawn one and lost eight of their last nine games and are in freefall. They’ve failed to score in seven of those matches and look certain for the drop unless they can somehow start picking up points.

Rennes sit eleventh in the table, safe in mid division but they have their own problems. Rennes started the season well but have started to falter with far too many draws to mount a credible challenge for a European spot.

They have the sixth best defence in the league but are simply awful at the other end with an average of just 0.94 goals per game scored. Their last eleven matches have seen them win one, lose one and draw an incredible nine times! This could open the door for Nancy to get something out of this game. They certainly won’t have a better chance of at least a draw, that’s for sure.

Expect this to be a low scoring affair with the possibility of a 1-0 for either side, or yet another draw for the stalemate specialists Rennes!

Toulouse v Marseille (Sunday 2:00 pm)
Toulouse take on Marseille on Sunday at the Municipal Stadium. Although this is a fairly meaningless encounter for Toulouse, they will still be looking to finish as high as possible in Ligue 1 after a mixed bag of a season. Defensively they are good with the fourth best back line in Ligue 1. The problems lie at the other end where they average only 1.06 goals per game.

They face a Marseille side who still have hopes of a fourth place finish and a Europa League spot for next season. It’s a tough ask for Marseille who probably need to win all their remaining fixtures and this game in particular is a very tough test away from home. Toulouse have kept four clean sheets in their last six matches and managed a stunning 0-0 draw away to PSG amongst that. They won’t fear the visitors at all. Marseille seem to be bottling it as we enter the tail end of the season, with draws against 13th and 17th place in the past two weeks.

We fancy Toulouse to keep up their defensive record and grab at least a point here at home in a low scoring match.

St Etienne v Nantes (Sunday 4:00 pm)
The final match in this week’s Ligue 1 Millionaire pool sees St Etienne (7th) hosting Nantes (9th). St Etienne were in with a good chance of a Europa League spot, but one win from their last five matches has saw them slip away. They still hold a very slim hope but they would need to start playing much better football. They face a Nantes side who are in decent form with five wins and three draws from their last nine matches with just a single defeat away to Monaco. They can be forgiven with that result, not many can compete with Monaco on their own turf!

Nantes don’t score many and will look to their main goal threat of Emiliano Sala who has scored almost one third of their goals this season. On paper St Étienne should win as they have a quality defence and can man mark Sala out the game, but the form tells a different story and Nantes are in confident mood.

The final game could go either way depending on which St Etienne side turns up, so protect your bets here. If Nantes do win, it will be by a single goal but the draw looks the safe bet.

Good luck…
