Watching American Gods put the fear of God in me

This show forced me to see all the things that I am not proud and absolutely intensified the fear of God in me.

It's called 'American Gods.' It's apparently so good that it got renewed after airing only two episodes!

The first time I heard of this show, I thought 'Oh God, not again, yet another series is out.' However, my interest was peaked when my friend told me about a goddess named Bilqis who takes in people's souls...and bodies during intercourse (don't blame me, sex sells.)

After hearing this, I got the first two episodes, started watching and I have to say that the first episode was absolutely mind blowing.

I'm going to try really hard not to give up any spoilers, but still refer to the parts that terrified me and put the fear of God, himself in me.

In episode 1, we see the lead character, Shadow, meet with a mysterious hustler named Mr. Wednesday, who offers him an impromptu job as his assistant.

Unknown to him, this mysterious character is no ordinary man. As we discover later, this 'man' is actually Odin, the Old Norse god of knowledge and wisdom.

Watching this made me wonder how many times God, Jesus, His angels walk on the earth. Haven't we all heard stories of people coming in contact with strangers who end up doing some pretty spectacular things?

No wonder, Christ encourages us to be kind to everyone we come across because you never know (Matthew 25:40-45.)

Moving on, there is another scene where we see a man and a lady meet for the first time. Apparently, they met online and this is their first physical contact.

Little is said before we see them in a room where the woman proceeds to seduce the man. At first, he seems unwilling, but he quickly gets into it.

Next, she asks him to worship her, he does and he ends up being sucked into her private part as she climaxes!!!

This lady is actually the ancient goddess Bilquis, an incarnation of the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba.

This scene reminded of the many times that we are advised to keep ourselves pure by abstaining from premarital sex because it is definitely a spiritual act that should only happen in marriage.

There is no doubt that we take it for granted, but you never know what could happen when you indulge in it, you might just end up losing your life like the unfortunate man in this show.

Episode 2 also had some moments that led to a little sober reflection. One is a scene where Shadow thinks he is going crazy because Lucy from I Love Lucy  suddenly starts talking to him.

This character is actually the new god, Media, who represents our obsession with technology and entertainment.

She said: "The screen’s the altar, I’m the one they sacrifice to — then ’til now, Golden Age to Golden Age. They sit side by side, ignore each other and give it up to me. Now they hold a smaller screen in their lap or the palm of their hand so they don’t get bored watching the big one. Time and attention: better than lamb’s blood."

"We’re the coming thing; we are already here. We are self-driving cars and 3D printers and subdermal time-release insulin," Lucy adds.

This definitely made me think of the amount of time we spend on phones, laptops, social media, time we could be spending reading the Bible, or praying. Her words showed the error of my ways.

Moving on to episode 3, we are confronted with the afterlife and Shadow makes snow. Wednesday tells Shadow to think of snow and next thing we see is snow!

This scene reminded of what the Bible says about faith.

"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." (Matthew 17:20)

A mustard seed is really tiny and we are told that having faith the size of this tiny thing can do anything, include moving a mountain and who knows, make snow too.

Ultimately, this show held up a mirror and forced me to see all of the things that I am not proud of.

It also reignited my faith in God and absolutely intensified the fear of God in me, which is a good thing since “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)
