'Do proper research and pre-building tests' - residents urge state government

The recent collapse of a five storey building prompted a stability test. However, residents are not satisfied with this.

Lekki Building Collapse

A five-storey building, belonging to Lekki Gardens Estate, collapsed on March 8, 2015.

This resulted in the death of over 30 people and the dismissal of four officers of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has taken some preventive measures, the latest being the commencement of a structural stability test.

"The State Government will undertake a stability test on all other buildings constructed by the Developer in the State, whether occupied or not, to ascertain their structural stability. Any building found to be defective would be demolished,”  he said.

While this is all remarkable, residents of the estate think developers and the government need to do more research and tests before building.

Mrs. Cecilia Agbeluyi, a resident, said the same thing, adding that an effective pre-building regulation would save lives.
