PDP crisis lingers as Supreme Court adjourns case until May 25

The Supreme Court verdict which would have been a decider was on Thursday, May 4, shifted.

At the resumed hearing on the application filed by the National Chairman of the Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the apex court adjourned the matter to May 25.

Sheriff had filed the application against the appeal filed by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party.

On March 16, the Makarfi faction approached the Supreme Court, asking it to overturn the Appeal court judgment that declared Sheriff as the authentic Chairman of the party.

The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on February 27 affirmed Sheriff as the legitimate National Chairman of the PDP.

Sheriff, in his counter application, is arguing that Makarfi has no legal grounds for his appeal.

He argued that the Sheriff-led PDP did not give anyone the permission to file a suit on its behalf, therefore, the suit filed by Makarfi is null and void.

In response, Makarfi's counsel urged the court to disregard the argument by Sheriff's lawyer.

He said since the issues raised by Sheriff's counsel are already in the substantive suit before the court and since issue have been joined, there is no need to listen to anybody who is not a part of the suit.

After listening to both parties the court adjourned to hear the objections as an interlocutory appeal on May 25, 2017.
