‘I never told Buhari not to go for second term,’ Ex-president says

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo’s warning was said to have come through his former Chief Press Secretary, Alex Nwokedi.

President Muhammadu Buhari meets with former president, Olusegun Obasanjo in Abuja on April 7, 2016

Obasanjo’s warning was said to have come through his former Chief Press Secretary, Alex Nwokedi.

The former president however described the report as “completely false and destructive by those behind it” adding that he hadn’t communicated with Mr Nwokedi in three years.

“My belief is that democracy allows for anybody including President Buhari for that matter to contest any election and it is the prerogative rights of Nigerians to vote or not to vote for them,” Obasanjo said via a statement issued by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi on Sunday, September 4, 2016.

“I have not communicated with Alex in the last three years, so how could a story be credited to me when I did not authorise such or communicated with him in the last three years?

“I condemn in the highest manner the story and those behind it. And for those behind it, they are simply enemies of democracy and freedom of expression,” he added.

Recent reports had it that Obasanjo boasted about pushing Buhari into power saying that the decision to choose the president was reached by him and “three or four others”.

The former president however denied the reports adding that Buhari was chosen by Nigerians.
