The rebel strike which Saudi media claims took dozens of lives, will be the first major assault on Saudi territory since the country began strikes against Houthi rebels in March.
According to statement from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the attack happened on the Saudi southern border, near Najran town on Thursday.
BBC reports that earlier on Thursday, a Saudi border guard was killed by a mortar shell close to the border with Yemen in the south-west Saudi province of Jizan, bringing to 14 the number of Saudis who have been killed during the last five weeks.
Since March, Saudi Arabia has been leading a coalition in a series of air strikes against Houthi rebels from Yemen with the declared aim of restoring exiled President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
Over 1,200 people have been killed and 300,000 have fled their homes in the past six weeks of fighting between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels, prompting concern from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who has called for an immediate ceasefire and urged all parties to ensure that humanitarian agencies have safe and reliable access.
