The Vice-President, Mr. Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has entreated residents of the Talensi area of the Upper East Region to vote massively for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr. B T Baba, on July 7, 2015.

He said Mr. Baba had the necessary qualities to represent the people in Parliament for "our party has faith in him that he can help develop the people at the grass roots, which is one of our cardinal principles."

Mr. Amissah-Arthur stated this at Tongo in the Talensi District on Tuesday during a courtesy call on the Tongorana KubilsongNalebiktangRobert Nachinab Doameng Mosore.

The visit was to enable him to introduce Mr Baba to the chief. He also introduced Mr. Baba to chiefs at Winkongo and Tindongo, both in the Talensi District.

According to the vice-president, "the Tongorana has left his big shoes and someone must be found to wear them and the NDC has selected Mr. Baba to wear the shoes."

He said residents of Talensi needed someone who could argue for them in Parliament to accelerate development in the area.

Tongorana

The Tongorana, in his response, said he was prepared to work with any candidate who would emerge victorious in the Talensi by-election.

He observed that development was a collective responsibility and stressed that “an MP needs to be selfless and committed to the development of the people."

The Tongorana equally warned political parties against politics of insults and entreated residents of Talensi to vote for a candidate who would be committed to the development of the area.

"The candidate you select must also stand for peace and development; let me remind you that politics is about development," he further stated.

Mr Baba said he would set up a Talensi Development Fund to accelerate the development of the area if he got the nod. He further explained that when that was done, it would provide the necessary logistics for increased productivity in agriculture, education and sports development, which are his priorities.

The National Vice Chairman of the NDC, Mr. SamuelOfosu Ampofo, noted that since 1992, the NDC had kept faith with the people of Talensi and the people had also done same.

He, therefore, expressed optimism that the people would reciprocate that gesture by voting for Mr Baba. He stated that “as a party, we are excited about the elevation of Mr Mosore to the status of a Tongorana and assure you that the NDC is here to bring development to the people.”

Mr Ofosu Ampofo assured the Tongorana that the "NDC would conduct a very peaceful campaign and avoid politics of insults; we would focus on issues that affect the development of the area."

Background

The Talensi by-election has become necessary following the enskinment and subsequent resignation of the incumbent Member of Parliament for Talensi, Mr Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, who has been installed as the paramount chief of the Tongo Traditional Area.

With barely a week to the by-election, various political parties have intensified their campaigns in the hope of capturing the seat.
