Members of the Industrial and Commercial workers Union (ICU) hit the streets in Tema this morning to protest high cost of living in the country.

According to the ICU, the demonstration was on the theme. "The state of the economy and its effects on Ghanaian workers."
“We have gotten to a point where if there will be increases in petrol prices every two weeks, a time has come we must halt it.”

These sentiments were expressed by ICU General Secretary Solomon Kotei on Wednesday during the demonstration.
Mr. Kotei charged workers to form unions at the least opportunity in order to weather some of the unfavourable measures by employers.
”In places where there are no unions, your salary reviews are not done regularly and you are treated with contempt,” he said.
“You are sacked at the will and beckon of the employer but if you have a union and a collective agreement, you are totally secured and for that matter no employer can look at you and treat you anyhow.”

According to him, the recent increase in petroleum products and the upward review of tariffs are indications that the government has lost touch with the realities of the Ghanaian.
