Six U.S. citizens are among the people who have been recovered from the Radisson hotel in Mali where attackers took 170 people hostage on Friday, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Dozens of people were reported to have escaped or been freed, but at least three were dead. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Army Colonel Mark Cheadle, a spokesman for the U.S. AfricaCommand, also said that U.S. special forces were assisting in the incident in the capital city of Bamako.
