Commander Stuart Cundy was quoted as saying that the number "may increase", adding that the "significant" recovery operation is likely to take weeks.
"As soon as we can, we will locate and recover loved ones," he added.
He also urged any of the survivors of the fire to let authorities know they are safe.
The report said there could be around 70 people missing.
The search of the tower was paused on Friday, June 16, due to safety concerns, but has now resumed, Commander Cundy said.
