Lungu will rule for the remainder of Sata’s term until the country conducts fresh elections in September 2016.

“I am humbled eternally and debted to you all, my fellow citizens,” Lungu said during his inauguration ceremony.

“The bottom line is that we want the country to go foward and to banish poverty in our midst,” he added.

Hichilema however contested the results saying:

"The election was stolen and does not reflect the will of the people.”

Sata’s death led to Vice President, Guy Scott being named interim President, making him Africa's first white ruler in 20 years.
