Two inmates in a maximum security wing of the Cook County Jail sabotaged security cameras and were in a standoff with officials after they took another inmate hostage late Thursday afternoon, the Cook County sheriff's office said.

The two inmates took control of the area, which houses 16 other inmates in Division 10 of the jail, after they covered the floor with soapy water and obscured cameras in the area before ripping them out, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

One of the other inmates was being held hostage by the two "with what appears to be a sharp object," according to the office.

The sheriff's Emergency Response Team was at the jail, trying to "resolve the situation peacefully," according to the release. No one had been injured as of a little before 7 p.m.
