Reports say the girl had been reported missing by her grandparents on Sunday morning after disappearing from her Cape Town home.
A 15-year old girl has been nabbed in South Africa as she attempted to flee the country to join ISIS.
AP reports that the girl had been reported missing by her grandparents on Sunday morning after disappearing from her Cape Town home.
She was however nabbed on board a British Airways flight bound for Johannesburg later that day. The girl was reportedly heading for Turkey, where she was allegedly planning to cross the border into Syria.
According to State Security Minister David Mahlobo:
“We can confirm that she was planning to leave the country with the intention of joining IS and had been actively engaged with social media networks”
Investigators reportedly found evidence in the girl’s room which linked her to recruiters for IS even as Mahlobo said investigations were underway to see how far this network goes, and also whether there is a cell in the country, and what the methods of recruiting and funding are.
In the meantime, the girl was released into the care of her family after being questioned.
Back in February, the United Nations Security Council had warned South Africa against terror groups that may use the country as an operational base.
