No fewer than 17 people are believed to have drowned in a ship wreck off the northern coast of Haiti, BBC reports.

Following the unfortunate event, the bodies of 11 men and 6 women washed ashore in the coastal town of Le Borgne, about 100 miles (160km) north of Port-au-Prince.

According to an official, the dead were migrants who were trying to reach the neighbouring Turks and Caicos Islands.

There has, however been no sign of a ship and it is unclear if there were any survivors.
